What You Need To Do If You Have Lost Your Social Security Card

If you have lost your social security card or it is stolen, there are a number of steps that you need to take to ensure you are safe from fraud. You also need to consider getting a replacement social security card. There are certain steps which are recommended when you have lost your social security card and you need to know what they are so they can help you if this happens.

Place An Alert On Your Credit Report

The first step that you should take when you notice that you no longer have your social security card is to place an alert on your credit report. This initial security alert will stay on your credit report for 3 months and will tell your creditors if you may have been a victim of identity theft. The alert will also stop anyone trying to get credit with your social security number.

The easiest way to set up this alert is to go online and head to one of the 3 credit report agencies. You can set up an alert online with these agencies or you can call them or send a request for the alert in the mail. The online method is generally considered the easiest and you will simply have to fill out a form online to do this.

You will not have to advise the other 2 credit agencies when you do this. By law, the credit agency that you initially contact will need to send the information on to the other credit agencies. However, you should get a free copy of your credit report when you place an alert. You should review the report and look for any fraudulent activity or activity that you do not recognize as your own.

If you notice any activity that you believe to be fraudulent, you need to contact the credit agency. It is recommended that you get a free copy of your credit report from all of the credit agencies as there could be something that appears on one that does not appear on the others.

Getting A New Social Security Card

After contacting the credit report agencies, you need to think about contacting social security. You may want to let social security know what your card is lost and that you would like to request a new one. However, you need to consider if you actually need the card as knowing your social security number will generally be enough to get by. Social security will allow you to get 3 replacements per year and 10 replacements in your lifetime.

If you decide to update your social security card or get it replaced, you will have to apply using the form SS-5. There are some cases where you will be able to apply for a replacement card online. However, you will need to have ID from certain states only and an online social security account. If you cannot apply online, you can do so via the post or in person at the social security office.
